Do you know that in our religion, brutal treatment of animals and animal torture, is regarded as a great sin and whoever commits such a sin is not considered a Muslim!

Among the sluaghter rituals, the human being, should pat gently on the animal, and utter words of permission and calming. Other than that, in Quran and Sunnah (our prophet's teachings) there are many teachings on how to deal with animals, and that we should not eat their meat if they were upset or not feeling well, and that's why when raising animals, farmers are asked to be kind, gentle and care for their animals to the max, not just the hygiene but also their feelings. So becoming a vegetarian, according to our religion, is better than eating mistreated animals :)

Plus all that, Muslims are advised by Islam to not live to eat, but eat to live, taking only what we need to survive without causing any imbalance on our planet, therefore what you see in our countries is all stemming out of traditions and social manners not out of religion.

This whole Eid Ad7a thing is originated because of the Ibrahim incident, but we don't do it to revive this incident the way you thought, it's mainly done as a reminder, BUT, its goal is to feed those who can't afford eating meat. To pay for something, and give it away as sacrifice to the poor and needy (kind of the same "Thanks giving" concept).
That's why this occasion should not be the cause of the slaughter of thousands of sheep as we sadly witness these days. But unfortunately, many Muslims "kill" the sheep, just to have a festive meal themselves, and believe me, many don't even give the needy, so it turns into killing just to feed their own stomachs that are not hungry in the first place.

What I'm trying to say is, what you witnessed, is not Islam, and what's happening to poor sheep, has nothing to do with our rituals, because as I said, every single action in our religion is something we get either rewarded or punished for, and since many aren't sticking to our religion's teachings, you can see many Muslim scholars preaching about how wrong that is, and that it's better not to participate in this Eid if they're gonna turn it into a massacre.

Thanks for sharing your opinion.

Barbara,
Thanks a lot for your comment, you know, it makes me so happy to know that mature, educated and well behaved people are willing to have a nice polite discussion :)

What you mentioned is horrible, and I'm not going to say you're lying or making things up or that some Muslims do what you just say, because the sad fact is, I too saw some Muslims in some countries who do the whole thing in a very wrong way.

I want to make one thing clear though, if you read along my post you'll notice that our religion gives big importance to how animals are treated, and FORBIDS by all means, the brutal handling of any creature. Slaughter as you saw it, has nothing to do with our teachings, slaughter is to be performed in a very peaceful way, the animals should be calmly communicated with, the environment of the slaughter should be peaceful and clean and calm, and an animal should not be slaughtered by force and while they're afraid. (to be continued)

I have seen animals fed, fattened and then killed during this sacrificial festival of Eid Al Adha in the name of religion. When you see the animals being dragged for slaughter with fear in their eyes, their veins being slit while multiple strong men are holding the trapped animal down, after which the animal lays in its pool of blood, writhing in pain for several minutes - it is indeed very inhumane and savage. I am not here to argue whether we should eat meat or not, but I think respect to nature, the ecosystem and animals we depend upon should be the essence of living. Savagely killing millions of animals because Abraham did it over a 1000 years ago is lame and inexcusable. Unfortunately, this behavior then translates into killing of humans, terrorism and wildspread ignorance because a certain "God says so". Sacrifice is a wonderful thing and it should come from within us. Killing animals brutally for the sake of following rituals is not sacrifice. Religion teaches about respect to everyone - Muslim or non Muslim. Unfortunately, that is not the spirit of Eid al Adha.
