Frédéric Kanouté: Supporting Palestine… and fined for it!

Filed under: Palestine, Posts in Arabic, Posts in German, Tunisia — Eman at 10:09 pm on Monday, January 12, 2009

Pic Source EPAThe famous Malian footballer Frédéric Oumar Kanouté revealed a T-Shirt expressing his support for Palestine during a match. As a reaction, the disciplinary committee of the Spanish football federation announced on January 9th a fine of 3,000 euros (4,093 dollars) on the veteran Sevilla striker for displaying this shirt, considering it an offense ( since the federation’s regulations forbid political and religious messages by players on the field). (English; Arabic).

Now although I’ve always respected regulations of all kinds, but I also believe that there are certain situations in which rules are to be broken, and I believe the situation in Gaza is one of these situations. Football players are human beings after all, and they’re entitled to express their minds freely in the times of crisis.

I wish that freedom of expression would’ve been respected more, and that an exception would have been considered since this message is more humanitarian rather than political, it’s a call to save the lives of innocent people who are being butchered on the watch of the whole world.

I personally consider his act brave and courageous, not a new thing to Kanouté. In the name of all Palestinians, I THANK you Kanouté, for this thoughtful gesture.

Don’t know Kanouté? get to know him.

Freedom of expression is only respected if it was Pro Israel, like what happened with Rachel Ray..
Salute to Kanoute

Dear Halim, thanks for your comment. I really don’t know what’s your point. The beauty of blogging is that multiple bloggers discuss the same thing from different angles. So if one blogger wrote about a certain topic, it doesn’t mean others shouldn’t, it’s exactly the opposite.

Unless you’re suggesting that I’m “stealing” content from other bloggers, then allow me to ask you to read my blog more regularly, I never do such a shameful thing. In fact if there’s content I found on someone else’s blog and blogged it on AquaCool, I’d be more than glad to link to the source.
So I hope we’re clear.

Dear Emna,

I live in Spain, and I know well this case, and would like to make 2 brief comments:
-I agree about the question of freedom of expression. The spanish professional football league has its own rules, and the fine received by the brave Kanouté is relatively light. There are israeli players and even a coach in Spain, imagine if they will do the same (but the other way).
- Spain’s Zapatero government & public opinion are very favorable to the Palestinian cause and the arab causes in general. They are doing mor and better than the Arabs. So, we have to differentiate the situation in US, GB, FR and Spain. There is no West, there are many western countries with different policies and public opinions. So, if we over-generalize and think that all the West is against us, we will lose another battle against the fascist regime of israel.
Cordially,
Gaudi

Dear Gaudi,
allow me to thank you for your comment and your respectful way of expressing your opinion.

I never meant to be against the west when I posted this piece of news, because as you perfectly said, our governments are far much worse, and it’s no secret.
I posted to show the support of Kanouté, something many Arabs don’t know.
And I called him brave, because he knew in advance that he’d be violating the regulations but he did it anyway, and although I’m usually against violating regulations, but there are cases as I mentioned, in which one can’t but break the rules.
Spain, and any country in the world is entitled to put whatever limitations they wish to put, but in the same token, any human being should express their opinion… and take responsibility for the consequences of course.

It’s not out of hatred or bias or anything, and I don’t mean this specific situation with Kanouté, but I truly believe that whenever something is expressed for the interest of Palestine, the whole world goes crazy, something that doesn’t usually happen with pro-Israel stands.

Anyway, glad you shared your opinion, and by the way, my name is Eman not Emna :)

Dear Eman,

First of all, sorry for mispelling your name, I was in a hurry and it is also a lapsus, Emna is my niece name and I miss her.
I think, that we have to lead well at least our arab public relations worldwide, our democratic governments are doing well in the political and military field. ;)
Well, keep cool Eman.

Gaudi, no need to apologize at all, this happens all the time, especially when I came to Tunisia, since my name is spelled Imen in French, so I’m used to being called Emna :) but I’m glad I remind you of your niece, hope you’ll meet her soon.

I totally agree with you on the fact that we should be wiser and smarter on the international level.

Hoping for a better future as usual… thanks again for your comment.
