1st Twitter Inspired Street Name, in Palestine
I woke up today to this piece of news that just gave me hope in a better tomorrow for Palestinian refugee camps, one way or the other, and despite the ever worsening conditions there; the news says:
Street in Palestinian Refugee Camp Named after Twitter Account
The street, which is now named “@arjanelfassed tweetstreet,” is located in Askar, a Palestinian refugee camp in the north of the West Bank.
The street name was bought for $140 by the Dutch-Palestinian owner of a twitter account called “Arjan El Fassed,” through a Web site set up to support cultural after-school activities for children in the camp.
What I find impressive is not just the fact that the 1st street ever to be named after a Twitter account is actually bought by a Palestinian, or that the street is located in Palestine, but the fact that such a project actually exists. I was really touched by the whole initiative, the people behind it, how they came up with such a creative idea and why they actually came to think of it.
The initiative was started by Johan van der Woude, Basthios Vloemans, Pete Mulder and Job van Oel. After traveling through Palestine and entering Askar refugee camp they came across a youth center, which seemed to be of great importance to the daily life of the camp’s children. They have noticed that the center doesn’t provide any adequate shelter for the children though, so they decided to volunteer, and raise funds for their goal, and that’s how this whole idea of street- naming was born.
Support this great cause by ordering your own street now, you donate 100 Euros, create your own street name and then you get 2 pics of your Street… Hurry up, the number of streets available is limited.
